Gauteng School Crisis

With government schools re-opening on the 17th of January 2018 on Wednesday, thousands of parents don’t know whether their children will make it to school this year or not.

This comes after Grade 1 and 8 pupils who's parents have applied for the 2018 academic year have still not yet been placed in schools.

In a statement Provincial Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said: “To date about 17 000 learners whose parents applied online have not yet been placed.”

The Minister further added on to say that 22 921 late applications have been received towards the end of the year. Adding that to date 8 865 learners from this group have been placed leaving a balance of 14 056.

“However, due to the additional financial cost of accepting additional learners, the Gauteng Department of Education has to consult with the Provincial Treasury to provide additional financial resources,” Lesufi said.

Parents experiencing any problems were asked to visit various designated admission centres on the 13th and 14th of January.

Those parents who applied late will be notified on the status of their application.
