SA Jazz Legend Ramapolo Hugh Masekela Dies
South Africa lose yet another music legend. The Jazz legend Hugh Ramopolo Masekela has died, at the age of 78. It seems like a black shadow is following South Africa, not so long we lost a beloved musician Robbie Malinga. Apparently, the trumpeter was suffering with prostate cancer, he’s been receiving treatment since 2008, when his doctor discovered a small speck on his bladder. The treatment appeared to be helpful and successful, as he had undergo surgery in March 2016 as the cancer had spread to most parts of his body. His family issued a statement Tuesday morning to confirm the passing of the legend. The statement reads “after a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he pasted peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family” Masekela was born in Witbank on 4 April 1936. He loved music since he was just a little boy. As a child, he began playing the piano, for him to pursue jazz he was inspired by a movie about jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, Young Man with a horn. Bra Hugh used his music as a weapon to fight the apartheid regime. We love to take this opportunity to thank him for his contribution to the struggle of liberation.
To his family, friends and fans we convey our condolences, he will always be treasured and remembers. May his soul rest in peace. By: Leon Natashia Ngomane
