e-Gov’s innovative projects scoop major ICT awards
Gauteng Department of e-Government’s flagship project the Gauteng Broadband Network (GBN) has been named the 1st runner-up in the category of ICT Service Delivery Transformation – Provincial Government, at this year’s Public Service ICT Awards, Finance MEC Barbara Creecy said.
The awards were held at Govtech 2017, the country’s major public sector ICT knowledge and learning event, which is currently taking place in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
This award recognises the most outstanding provincial service delivery initiatives that transform the lives of citizens and focused on the rollout of the broadband. The first prize went to the broadband initiative of the Western Cape Government.
This is the second award that GBN has won this year. In February it took Gold in the provincial government’s Premier’s Service Excellence Awards for being the “Best Infrastructure Project in Gauteng”.
To date, the rollout of GBN is on track. Building of the core network has been completed and more than 1000 sites including health facilities, libraries and schools have been connected.
“I congratulate the Department of e-Government for this achievement. Through GBN we continue to digitise the province to improve service delivery to citizens. This project has taken fibre connectivity to regions of the province previously marginalised by the private sector fibre footprint,” MEC Creecy said.
In addition, e-Gov’s e-Recruitment Project took 2nd runner up in the Innovative use of Information and Communication Technology for Effective Service Delivery category, at this year’s Centre for Public Service Innovation (CPSI) Awards that took in Ekurhuleni on Friday last week.
This category celebrates the innovative use of ICTs to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery with specific emphasis on the interface with citizens. The overall winner was the Gauteng Department Education for the Online School Registration solution.
“e-Gov was instrumental in ensuring the success of the Online School Registration solution application. This further demonstrates that as the Gauteng Provincial Government we are serious about using technology to improve service delivery to citizens,” MEC Creecy said.
